All-Filipino Crew of Cymona Eagle Honored for Rescuing Finnish Solo Rower

February 24, 2026 – The 19 Filipino seafarers aboard the Greek merchant ship Cymona Eagle are receiving high praise for a dramatic rescue at sea. In early January 2026, the all-Filipino crew saved the life of Jari Saario, a well-known Finnish solo rower, in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean.

A Historic Voyage Interrupted

Saario was attempting an ambitious 8,000-kilometer journey. He aimed to become the first solo rower to cross the South Atlantic from Cape Horn to Cape Town. However, a severe maritime storm abruptly halted his historic attempt. The extreme weather conditions overturned his rowing vessel, leaving him stranded.

Before the merchant ship arrived, the solo rower faced life-threatening circumstances:

  • He spent 36 hours completely adrift in his waterlogged boat.
  • He suffered prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures and the immediate risk of severe hypothermia.
  • He endured the constant dangers of the open ocean with no backup.

Overcoming Extreme Rescue Challenges

The crew of the Cymona Eagle executed the rescue operation under incredibly difficult and dangerous conditions. The Filipino seafarers managed to locate and safely pull the rower from the water while battling massive waves reaching over seven meters high and navigating through fierce winds.

Care and Compassion at Sea

Following the rescue, Saario spent seven days recovering aboard the merchant vessel. During a recent courtesy visit to Philippine Ambassador to Finland Domingo P. Nolasco, the Finnish rower expressed his deep gratitude to the men who saved his life. He highlighted the crew’s friendly and caring nature, noting that the seafarers even organized a thanksgiving party to celebrate his survival before he safely disembarked in Cape Town.

Official Government Commendation

Both the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Philippine Embassy in Finland issued official statements commending the crew. The agencies praised the seafarers for their critical and timely intervention.

The government highlighted several key points regarding the rescue:

  • The crew demonstrated exceptional maritime skill and professionalism during a severe crisis.
  • They showed deep compassion and a strong willingness to help someone in direct need.
  • Their heroic actions actively enhanced the global reputation of Filipino maritime professionals.

These 19 seafarers stand as a strong example of the dedication, bravery, and high capability of Filipino workers operating across the global maritime industry today.
